On Monday, October 5th we are excited to welcome Mayor Greg Fischer and Ted Smith, Chief of Civic Innovation, to talk about Google Fiber potentially coming to Louisville. Google Fiber is a broadband internet and cable television service provider that offers connection speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second or up to 100X faster than a typical cable provider. According to Business Insider, Kentucky was ranked 3rd to last in average internet speed in 2014; having Google Fiber come to Louisville could only help that ranking. There are currently only three Google Fiber Cities, six Upcoming Google Fiber Cities and six Potential Google Fiber Cities; Louisville is now one of the latter. The city was recently invited to join this short and prestigious list on September 10th through the Google Fiber Blog. The post claimed the three cities that were nominated to be potential fiber cities had strong leaders at city hall, entrepreneurial cultures and even mentioned Code Louisville as a specific example of why they were interested in exploring the possibilities here. Greg Fischer has been the mayor of Louisville since 2010 and began his second 4 year term this past January. The top three goals of his administration are: “creating good-paying jobs, improving education at all levels, and making Louisville an even more compassionate city.” He was an entrepreneur before he became mayor with experience starting multiple businesses such as SerVend International, Iceberg Ventures and bCatalyst. Ted Smith is the Chief of Civic Innovation for the City of Louisville. His office directly leads initiatives that grow the innovation economy of Louisville. Ted has an extensive past in business, succeeding at different rolls including “CEO” and “Co-Founder”. Ted has been a long time believer in the need for Louisville to become an elite Goggle Fiber City. Almost a year ago to date he was cited in Insider Louisville saying it was a key for Louisville’s future competitiveness.
